Blais loaned to Devils; Robson joins NIHL on two-way deal; former Stingray news

Hull Stingrays player-coach Sylvain Cloutier has had a busy week juggling his squad ahead of Challenge Cup fixtures against the Cardiff Devils on Sunday and against the Sheffield Steelers in South Yorkshire of Wednesday.

As well as awaiting the arrival of new import signings Kyle Mariani and Carl Lauzon, the Stingays boss has also offered two of his depth players the chance to gain ice-time elsewhere.
On Wednesday, it was announced that backup netminder - and 12th import - Greg Blais had joined Erhardt Conference side Cardiff on a two-week loan deal.

The 33 year old netminder - who stopped 9 of 11 shots in relief of Ben Bowns in the Rays opening fixture a week ago against the Nottingham Panthers - joins the Devils as a temporary replacement for injured starting netminder Dan LaCosta.

The deal, which will last for two-weeks while Lacosta recovers from a head injury sustained in pre-season, includes a clause which means Blais cannot play against the Stingrays this weekend. He will make his debut in the Welsh capital on Saturday against the Braehead Clan with Joe Myers starting in Hull on Sunday before fixtures next weekend in Dundee and against Nottingham.

Cardiff player-coach Gerad Adams said:
“Greg will give us another option and demonstrates the proactive approach from the club to find import cover and to work with Joe to help us win hockey games. Whilst it has been challenging this week we are focussed and know what we need to do.”
Following the temporary departure of Blais, Cloutier has also allowed young defenceman Scott Robson to join the NIHL's Blackburn Hawks on a two-way contract.
The 18 year old - who made his Elite League debut with the Rays last season, dressing in 37 games - is highly rated by the Stingrays. However, with the club now able to boast an eight man blueline following the arrival of Mariani, the GB junior international has been allowed to join the Hawks in order to gain valuable and regular ice-time.

The two-way deal will see Robson - who lived and grew up in the North West - primarily ice for the Hawks in the NIHL North 1 while dressing with the Stingrays when the Hawks don't have a fixture or if required by the Stingrays.

On adding Robson to his squad, Hawks player-coach Jared Owen said:
“Scott has been training in Blackburn during the summer and has really impressed me, Dangie and the team with his ability on the ice. He approached us earlier this year and said that Hull were looking for him to get more regular ice time and continue his development. Once the opportunity presented itself we jumped at it. Scott has previously played with the Blackburn Juniors and we’ve been following his career so far with interest. He’s played in the top-tier of hockey in this country and you can see a real difference in his game since training and playing in the Elite League over the last season. We’re really grateful to Sylvain Cloutier and the Hull Stingrays organization for giving us the chance to benefit from the two-way deal and I’m sure he will become a very welcome addition to the team for the new season.”
In former player news, forward Dominic Osman will join the Southern Professional Hockey League's Huntsville Havoc this season.
Osman - who was signed to provide the Stingrays secondary scoring in 2010 - was well liked thanks to his gritty, hardworking style of play during his two season's in Hull - where he hitting 25 and 26 goal seasons as well as 83 points in 120 games.

Having left Hull in April, he moved down under to spend the summer with the Newcastle North Stars of the Australian Ice Hockey League.

He helped the North Stars to a second placed league finish with 18 goals and 51 points - eighth in the AIHL. In the post-season the North Stars progressed to the playoff final but - despite a hat-trick from Osman - were defeated 6-3 by the Sydney Ice Dogs - who lifted the Goodall Cup.

Meanwhile, last season's fan favourite Ryan Hand looks set to return to the Central Hockey League.

The 28 year old enforcer - who recorded two goals and 15 assists as well as 266 penalty minutes and 13 fighting majors last season in Hull - had originally agreed to join the Cornwall RiverKings of the LNAH - a league renowned for fighting.

However, his agent has announced he will instead return to the CHL - where he has previously spent three years of his career, recording two goals, six assists and 302 penalty minutes in 123 games.

Stingrays add Squires on two-way

The Hull Stingrays have signed former Sheffield Steelers forward Tom Squires on a two-way contract from English Premier League side Sheffield Steeldogs.

The British winger rejected the Stingrays in the summer to join hometown club the Steeldogs having recorded 14 goals and 34 points in 98 games with the Steelers. Nevertheless, despite dropping down from the EIHL, the Sheffield born forward has so far struggled offensively in the EPL, recording just two assists in 11 games in the second tier.

Rays player-coach Sylvain Cloutier has moved to add Squires in order to boost the Rays numbers following the concussion sustained by Andy Ward in a hit by Sheffield Steelers former NHL forward Tom Sestito which has ruled the Brit out of the lineup.

Cloutier said:
"With Andy Ward out injured I wanted to add some depth to the line-up. Tom is someone I wanted to sign in the summer but he went to the Steeldogs. But I spoke to him and asked if he wanted to come and play on a two-way deal. He has that experience of playing in the Elite League for the Steelers and has shown he can play at that level. He has good skill and he will get his chance in Cardiff tonight. It is a good opportunity for him and I expect him to take advantage of that."
Former Great Britain junior international Squires will make his debut for the club in tonight's crunch Challenge Cup clash with the Cardiff Devils and will be available to ice for the Rays when the Steeldogs are without a game.

A win for the Stingrays in regulation in South Wales tonight will see them qualify outright for the Quarter Finals of the cup competition for the first time in their history. Their last foray into a cup competition quarter finals came automatically as they were defeated 8-3 on aggregate by the Manchester Phoenix in the Knockout Cup.

Stingrays bolster Brit pack with two-way deals

The Hull Stingrays have today continued the process of replenishing their British corps - following the defection of what is likely to be all nine of last season's British roster - with the addition of forwards Sam Towner and Andy Ward on two-way contracts with the club's English National League setup.

Sam McCluskey, Tristan Harper, Jack Watkins (Dundee Stars), Andy McKinney (EPL; Manchester Phoenix), Dan Scott (EPL; Slough Jets) and Bobby Chamberlain (Canada; Ogden Mustangs) have all left the club this summer after season long stints with the club while Andy Brummit, Ryan Lake and Matty Davies also look unlikely to return.

While Towner and Ward were sparingly used last season during a similar nine and five game two-way stint respectively, it is highly likely their ice-time will increase in the upcoming season given the turnover of British players. The change is, in part, believed to be a cost cutting measure by new owner Bobby McEwan during his first season at the helm, which may allow budget normally spent on Brits wages and accommodation to be used for other outgoings.

30 year old Ward - who lead the ENL Stingrays in scoring (26) and was second in assists (16) and points (42) - showed his size and good solid skating ability in brief glimpses last season and again steps up to EIHL level having only restarted his senior hockey career a number of years ago.

Meanwhile, at the opposite end of the spectrum 17 year old Towner has begun his senior career where so many - including Bobby Chamberlain, Stevie Lee, Kevin and Dave Phillips - also began theirs. After playing at every level of the Kingston Junior Development Programme, last season he also iced for both the ENL Stingrays - where he scored nine goals and 22 points in 21 games - and Stingrays U18's - where he dominated scoring 16 goals and 12 assists for 28 points in just 16 games.

Speaking of the Stingrays latest additions, McEwan said:
"I saw Andy playing rec hockey a couple of years ago and told him he was too good to be doing that. He has speed and skill, he has got a bit of an edge, he is a competitor and he does not like to lose. He works hard and he has been getting himself into shape over the summer. He has made that commitment, he wants to play for the team and he wants to take the opportunity with both hands."
"Saw is a player for the future, he has got all the skills and he loves the game. He stepped in last season and played back-to-back games against Edinburgh and Dundee when we had a few injuries. He was put on a lone with Clouts [player-coach Sylvain Cloutier]. Sam was unbelievable for someone his age - he was only 16! Clouts was really impressed with him"
One a prospect for the future and one a first chance saloon at 30. Few will, or at least should, expect a massive offensive output from either, however, when called upon they will be replacing homegrown forwards and, it has to be said, reputable prospects, that last season generated nine, eight, five, four and two point seasons - therefore the bar has not been set high for the next generation of Stingrays Brits.

With six confirmed British departures and three more all but confirmed, the Stingrays have a long way to go before each outgoing Brit is replaced by one incoming.

Although it is believed Cloutier has targeted - and in most cases signed his squad for 12/13, including the British corps - the so-far confirmed British signings of Ben Bowns, Chris Sykes, Andy Ward and Sam Towner leave him four players short - and that is with the extra allowed import next season factored in.

Former captain Dulle returns to Hull

31 year old defenceman and last season's Excel Hull Stingrays captain Kurtis Dulle has today made a surprise return to the club.

The blueliner registered 12 goals and 31 assists last season before leaving at the end of his contract to sign with Sydney Bears of the Australian Ice Hockey League - whose season  spans the British summer - for what was expected would be the final stop in a six year professional career.

Former longtime CHLer Dulle notched eight goals and 19 points in 21 games down under but returned to North America from Australia unsure as to whether he wanted to end his career in the sport.

He and Sylvain Cloutier kept in touch throughout the summer but with the Rays struggling in the early season, particularly in defence - having won just one game and claimed just three points in 13 fixtures - Cloutier put the wheels into motion a couple of weeks ago and offered a contract to the Rays former captain.

Dulle was originally signed in 2010 as a late replacement for captain-to-be Joshua Mizerek and he went on to become one of the captures of the summer last season alongside fellow imports Jereme Tendler and Andrew Coburn.

He thrived alongside former NHL veteran and last season's assistant coach Drew Bannister - who joined the club in November - as they lead the club to a record year.

The kind of all-around defenceman that the Stingrays have lacked since offensive blueliners Kevin Young and Craig Minard donned club colours, Dulle thrived in Hull and Cloutier will be hoping he will have a similar influence on what has so far this season been a lacklustre defensive corps. He said:
"He played a huge part in our success last season. He reads the game well, he can play defensive byt also jump in on the play if necessary. It will take the pressure off our young defencemen and help them out too...Kurtis brings a lot of experience and leadership, he knows me, he knows the team, the league and the city, so there will be no adjustments there so that will be key."
While his influece on-ice on the current roster may not be called into question after a standout year in yellow and blue last season, the effects his signature has on the other nine imports and their future job prospects does.

Dulle's signature brings the Rays up to 11 imports - one more than is allowed on any EIHL match day roster. Part of Cloutier's thinking in bringing back his former captain is that, not only will he improve the playing roster in the short term - boosting the squads defensive numbers to six - but it will also allow the Stingrays coach to analyse, assess and tackle any weaknesses in the squad.

Once player-coach Cloutier decides to return to the ice there will be tough decisions and at least one cut to be made dependant on where he has spotted frailties.

At present, netminder Christian Boucher, defenceman Dmitri Rodin and forwards Jason Silverthorn and Jereme Tendler will - provided their performances don't deteriorate in the near future - be safe, while recent outings have also seen Dominic Osman raise his game and settle somewhat in the UK.

That leaves defencemen Martin Ondrej, captain Joshua Mizerek and forwards Frantisek Bakrlik and Derek Campbell in a particularly prone position. Nevertheless, with Cloutier stepping onto the bench, one thing he has made clear is that no player will be safe - whether they have impressed, or not, at the start of the season - if they don't perform in the next handful of fixtures.
"All the guys' jobs are on the line, so whoever doesn't produce over the next week or so could lose their job. Whether it's a forward or a defenceman it doesn't matter, someone's going to be gone."
It has been confirmed that Dulle should be back in the UK in time to face former team mate Bannister's new Braehead Clan side on Wednesday as they face the Stingrays for the first time this season at the Hull Arena.

Also making his Stingrays debut that night will be Telford Tigers British forward Andy McKinney. The 20 year old - who has joined the club on a two-way contract - will be hoping to help the Stingrays look build on a topsy-turvy weekend in which they lost to bottom side Edinburgh at home before beating Dundee in Scotland.

Stingrays add fourth netminder and fifth pre-season fixture

The Excel Hull Stingrays have today announced the signing of former GB junior international Ben Bowns on a two-way contract from English Premier League side Sheffield Steeldogs alongside the news that they will take on the Steeldogs at Ice Sheffield on 30 August as part of their pre-season preparations.

Bowns, 20, was called up to Paul Thompson's senior national side as reserve netminder for April's World Championships in Ukraine having thoroughly impressed in four years with GB U18's and U20's. Last year the EPL stopper claimed netminder of the tournament at the U20 Division 1 Worlds having recorded a 90.9sv.% in 50 games as the underdog Steeldogs edged into the playoffs in eighth place.

He joins the Stingrays on a loan deal from his hometown Sheffield - where he has been since starting his career in 06/07 - and, although he is unlikely to make regular appearances in the blue and yellow, he will gain valuable experience training and backing up starter Christian Boucher in the Elite League when the Steeldogs are without a game.

Rays player-coach Sylvain Cloutier spoke of his first two-way signing of the summer:
"I am delighted to have Ben on board and to be able to help further his development. He will be on a two-way contract between us and the Sheffield Steeldogs and we have signed him in case of an emergency as we already have Andy Brummitt backing up Christian Boucher”.

With Andy Brummitt signed up to ice for both the Stingrays and English National League side Kingston Jets, and Hull born keeper Liam Jackson also training with Cloutier's side, the club is evidently taking different route with its backup netminding situation this season.

Previously - as is the case at the majority of Elite League clubs - it is common for a backup keeper to be used very sparingly, normally only when his side is on the receiving end of a thrashing or handing out a beating of its own.

That was the exact situation last season in Hull - when backup Andy Jaszczyk icing in just three games, mostly against a lacklustre Edinburgh side - however, with Brummitt, Jackson and Bowns all mixing Elite League time with lower league experience, the club and Cloutier instead look to be trying to develop a number of options next season.

Bowns has fast become a big prospect in British hockey, and Steeldogs coach Andre Payette told the Sheffield Star he believes Bowns can take his game to the next level:
"Ben is fast becoming as good as Elite League imports. We will lose him at some stage, but for now his main responsibility is Steeldogs - he can train and play for Hull when we’re not playing.”
Meanwhile, the Stingrays have also announced that their fifth pre-season fixture of the summer will see them take on the Bowns' Steeldogs in Sheffield on Tuesday 30 August (7.30pm).

The two clubs last met at Ice Sheffield in a pre-season encounter prior to the 09/10 season - Cloutier's first season in Hull - when a nine import Rays came away with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over the one import EPL side. In that game Bowns and former Hull favourite Pasi Raitanen played a big part in keeping the score to two as Tommy Sandahl notched his first and only shutout with the club and Adam Knight also impressed on his debut.

The Steeldogs will have at least three former Stingrays in their line-up in August following the signings of Ukrainian Pavel Gomenyuk, first year Ray Stuart Brittle and last season's Andy Hirst - who has returned to Sheffield.

Stingrays pre-season will see them take on Coventry home and away on the weekend of August 27 and 28, Steeldogs on Tuesday August 30 and Tilburg and Geleen on September 3 and 4 respectively.

The signing of Bowns and arrangement of the pre-season fixture only heightens speculation that the two clubs are set to announce an official link that will see tighter links between the two clubs.

Last season the Steeldogs controversially bypassed links to Elite League neighbours Sheffield Steelers in favour of their players icing in Hull. Forward Hirst made the move from two-way contractee to a full time Stingray, and Chris Sykes and Hull born Craig Elliott, amongst others, also made the trip up the M18 for ice-time, and it is thought this looks set to continue next season.

Archer signs two-way deal

On Sunday night, the Excel Hull Stingrays announced that the team had come to terms with English Premier League side the Sheffield Scimitars to sign 21 year old British forward James Archer on a two-way contract. The contract, the first to be handed out by the team's second ever head coach Sylvain Cloutier, allows Archer to ice for the Rays if and when the Scimitars do not have a game.

The Rays have already benefited from the former GB U20's presence twice, not least on Sunday against the Nottingham Panthers, where Archer scored his first goal at Elite League level with a cool finish that ultimately proved crucial in helping the Rays to a 5-4 victory.

That goal added to the assist he recorded in his first game as a Stingray last weekend as the Rays claimed a point in a shootout loss to that very same Panthers side. However, he does have previous Elite League experience with the Coventry Blaze, where he iced in a total of 33 games, registering just one assists.

Without doubt his development as a player has been served almost exclusively in the EPL, where he has been a very effective player with stints in his hometown Sheffield, Peterborough, where he played much of his early career, and, last season, Milton Keynes allowing him to accumulate over 140 points in 200 plus games.

So far this season the British forward has netted 14 times in the EPL for the Scimitars adding nine assists in 23 games as the Sheffield based side sit in 5th place and he will provide depth and energy to Cloutier's side for the remainder of the season.

Cloutier, who played with Archer at Coventry, revealed that he will play for the Rays in this months games against Edinburgh, on Boxing Day, and Coventry on the December 30.
"I was with James in Coventry so I know what he is capable of. He didn't get a lot of ice time with Coventry and moved on. But we have signed him on a two-way contract and he will play for us in Edinburgh and against Coventry [on December 30]. I thought he worked hard against Nottingham and took his goal well. He certainly adds some energy to our play when he is on the ice."
